PITCH COMPETITION RULES
CANARY ISLANDS STARTUP DESTINATION 2024
1.- INTRODUCTION
AJE Las Palmas fulfills its commitment to promote the innovative ecosystem across all the islands through the organization of Canarias Destino Startup, an event co-financed by the Ministry of Economy, Knowledge and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, which brings together startups, technology-based companies, innovative SMEs, private investors, public entities, business angels and venture capital, thus creating a meeting point that facilitates contact between all these actors in the ecosystem to promote investment, commercial or strategic agreements and boost the economy and innovation in the Canary Islands.
2. OBJECTIVE
The objective of the Canarias Destino Startup pitch competition is to give visibility to the different actors of the innovative ecosystem in the Canary Islands and for them to promote solutions to the various market challenges, choosing the startups that will present during the event, which will take place on September 18, 19 and 20, 2024 in person.
Projects will be selected based on criteria such as their innovative nature, viability, scalability, equipment, and appeal to potential investors. These criteria are defined in the "Evaluation Criteria" section of these guidelines.
3.- PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS
This competition is open to startups regardless of their geographical location. All entrepreneurs, whether individuals or legal entities, of legal age, legally established or registered as self-employed, regardless of nationality, and seeking third-party funding and investment, are eligible to participate.
The selection criteria that will be used to choose the finalists and the winning startups are as follows:
Invertible, an interesting proposal for investors, financial institutions and/or companies.
Feasibility and technically and commercially viable projects or products.
Scalability, potential for internationalization and application in other countries.
Team, relevant experience and commitment to the development and launch of your proposal.
Innovation, relevant and differentiating innovative aspects.
Historical data: funding obtained and billing up to the date of application submission.
Linkage with the region and its impact on it.
4.- SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS
4.1. Participation in the competition implies acceptance of all the terms and conditions. Failure to accept any of the points will result in disqualification from the competition and, if selected and/or awarded a prize, automatic forfeiture of the prize.
4.2. Applications must be submitted via email to hola@canariasdestintostartup.com indicating the name and position of the person presenting, as well as the name of the startup.
4.3. Applicants will answer to the event organizers for the veracity of the data communicated, ensuring that it corresponds to their person and not to that of a third party.
5.- REGISTRATION PERIOD
Registration for the Pitch Competition is free and can only be done through hola@canariasdestinostartup.com, following the criteria established in these rules. The deadline for submitting applications is Sunday, September 15, 2024, at 00:00 (UTC - Canary Islands).
6.- TIMELINE AND SELECTION PROCESS

Phase 0: Opening of the call for applications and sending applications via hola@canariasdestinostartup.com
Phase 1: The jury will select the finalist startups based on the criteria outlined in these guidelines. The list of selected projects will be published on the event's website and social media channels.
Phase 2: Projects that have passed the first phase will present their pitch in person at the event, on September 17th and 19th, 2024.
Phase 3: The jury will announce the winning startups on the last day of the event.
7. CONFIDENTIALITY AND DISSEMINATION
All participants should be aware that the information presented in their pitches may be shared with the public and the media.
Participants have the option to request that certain confidential information not be shared publicly. In this case, participants must clearly indicate what information should not be shared and why.
The contest organizers undertake to protect the confidential information of the participants and to use it only for the purpose of evaluating the contest.
By submitting their pitch, participants agree that the competition organizers may share their information and pitches with the judges, event sponsors, and other third parties who may be interested in the startups.
8.- PRIZES
The awards will consist of a winning startup of general scope and then a series of runner-up prizes that may be modified if there are no participants related to their area.
Award for the best Startup: €10,000 in cash, named by the Gran Canaria Island Council.
Award for the best startup in the medical field, named by San Roque University Hospitals: €3,000
Award for the best startup in the social sector: €3,000
9.- JURY
The award for best Startup will be made up of different members of the sponsoring entities of the awards as well as the runners-up who will be given directly by the sponsor of their specific award.
10.- TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTANCE:
The selected participants agree to submit the required documentation and participate in the event at the assigned time.
AJE Canarias, AJE Las Palmas and/or Canarias Destino Startup reserve the right to exclude any participant who attempts to defraud, alter or disable the proper functioning of the initiative.
The decisions of the selection committee and the jury will be final and irrevocable. Failure to accept the terms and conditions implies waiver of the right to receive any prize and exclusion from the competition.
11.- INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS:
The selected participants declare that they have sufficient titles to the industrial property rights included in their proposals.
They guarantee and answer to AJE Canarias, AJE Las Palmas and/or Canarias Destino Startup that they are owners or holders of the rights to grant the publication license and do not infringe any intellectual property rights or any other type of third party.
The participant will be responsible to AJE Canarias, AJE Las Palmas and/or Canarias Destino Startup for the veracity of the data communicated and will hold the organization harmless from any claim or demand filed by third parties in relation to the content published within the framework of the initiative.
12.- CONFIDENTIALITY AND DISCLOSURE OBLIGATIONS:
The confidentiality of the ideas and/or projects presented by the participants in the event is guaranteed.
The organizers may promote the general characteristics of the projects involved, including the names of the ideas and/or projects, the participants and especially the winners.
13.- ADVERTISING:
Applicants, especially winners, authorize AJE Canarias, AJE Las Palmas and/or Canarias Destino Startup, without territorial or time limits, to use their name, image, voice and general characteristics and the name of the ideas or projects submitted for advertising, informational and/or promotional purposes, provided that the provisions of the Intellectual Property and Confidentiality sections of this document are respected and without any right to compensation.
14.- PRIVACY POLICY, DATA PROTECTION AND GDPR COMPLIANCE:
In compliance with current data protection regulations, AJE Canarias, AJE Las Palmas, and/or Canarias Destino Startup inform you that they are responsible for processing the personal data of participants. This data will be collected through registration forms on the competition website and will be used to manage your participation in the competition, as well as to communicate with the winner and facilitate the awarding of the prize and the publication of their name and image on the website and in any other media.
The legal basis for processing your data is the consent you, as the participant, give by accepting these terms and conditions and registering for the session. You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time, easily and free of charge, by writing to hola@canariasdestinostartup.com. However, this will not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before you withdraw your consent. In any case, failure to provide the required personal data may prevent you from participating in the competition.
The personal data provided to AJE Canarias, AJE Las Palmas and/or Canarias Destino Startup by participants must always be truthful and complete. If the data is found to be false, and the prize has been awarded to the participant, AJE Canarias, AJE Las Palmas and/or Canarias Destino Startup reserve the right to deny the right to receive said prize at any time.
Your data will not be shared with third parties unless required or stipulated by law. However, it may be shared with collaborating entities, promoters, organizers, and other participants in the competition (“Partners”) of the event, or with AJE Canarias, AJE Las Palmas, and/or Canarias Destino Startup, for the purpose of promoting your company and contacting you due to the interest generated as a result of your participation in the competition.
If these collaborating entities were located outside the Community territory, it would be an international transfer of data, which would be carried out with the appropriate legal guarantees in accordance with Articles 44 et seq. of the GDPR.
The data may be kept for at least six (6) years, according to article 30 of the Spanish Commercial Code.
Participants have the right to exercise their rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, objection and, where applicable, not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing, including profiling, by sending a written communication via email to hola@canariasdestinostartup.com, with the Ref. "Exercise of Rights".
AJE Canarias, AJE Las Palmas and/or Canarias Destino Startup reserves the right to modify these terms and conditions at any time, including the award and/or its possible cancellation before the scheduled date of resolution, provided there is a justified cause, and undertakes to publish said modification through its website.
15.- MODIFICATIONS AND CANCELLATIONS:
AJE Canarias, AJE Las Palmas and/or Canarias Destino Startup reserves the right to modify the terms of the call at any time, including the award and/or cancellation before the resolution date, if there is a justified cause.
If participants wish to modify or cancel the data they have provided, they must do so by email to hola@canariasdestinostartup.com.
16.- APPLICABLE LAW AND JURISDICTION:
The terms and conditions of participation are subject to the laws of Spain. The place of jurisdiction for any legal dispute relating to these terms is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
